Stuart Houghton - Winner: New Exhibitor Award 2009
Almost 42 years after training in ceramics at Birmingham School of Art, Stuart has become a potter. The intervening years spent designing, making and exporting giftware around the world provided a good number of jobs but left no spare time for the potter's wheel.
Stuart commented "There has been a little mental adjustment to be made - I now talk in terms of a couple of dozen pots a week whereas I was used to counting in thousands. It has been quite a shock to realise how multi-skilled a "one-man band" must be - keeping accounts, ordering materials, drumming up publicity, selling, packing and posting - not to mention actually designing and making."
Stuart is a "materials person" and his inspiration comes from the clay; from stretching his knowledge of its qualities and from developing his technique. He uses a very fine porcelain which, on the face of it, could give one a false impression. His pots are robust, not fine and shell-like but thrown to be strong and resilient and to cope with dishwashers and the thermal shock of oven to table use.
